A series is a championship – with same drivers scoring points across a season. The Series in New Zealand fall into three major categories

Formula Regional Oceania Trophy

Formula Regional Oceania Trophy is FIA certified racing series dating back to 2006/05. It is a single seater open wheel racing category and often Touted as a scaled down F1 Car. Drivers competing in this series hail from across the world with our very own Kiwi drivers having a lot of success in the series. All teams are given identical cars assembled by Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand. So its down to team strategy, car setup and crucially driver skill to navigate through the field and emerge as the champion. Races take place during the Kiwi summer holidays and a great event to enjoy with friends, family and the kids for both North & South Island

• Notable Winners: Winners of this series have often made it to F1and even won the F1 championship – Arvind Lindblad (2025), Liam Lawson (2019), Lando Norris (2016) and Lance Stroll (2015). Other than Liam Lawson, other notable past Kiwi winners are well know on the international racing scene – Mathew Payne (Supercars Championship), Nick Cassidy (FormulaE) and Mitch Evans (Formula E).  Brendon Hartley (Kiwi), Yuki Tsunoda and Franco Colapinto are other F1 drivers that graced the series.

New Zealand Formula Ford

The New Zealand Formula Ford Championship is a National Race Championship series dating back to 1971. It is a single seater spaceframe chassis open wheel racing category and a breeding ground for young  Kiwi drivers that are in the early days of their racing career.

• Notable winners : Liam Lawson (F1), Andre Heimgartner (Supercars Championship), Shane van Gisbergen (NASCAR), Fabian Coulthard (Supercars Championship), Scott Dixon (INDYCAR Series). Other Kiwi drivers that participated in the series are Brendon Hartley (ex. F1 and LeMans 24 winner), Mitch Evans (Formula E), Marcus Armstrong (INDYCAR Series) and Earl Bamber (LeMans 24 winner).

New Zealand Formula First

The NZ Formula First Championship is open-wheel mortorsport racing. It is seen as the start of many aspiring Kiwi drivers given the affordable cost due to strict regulations preventing costly modifications/enhancements. This gives a level playing feed and relies heavily on driver talent and the ability to maximise slipstreaming. The earliest records of championship date back to 1975.

GR86 Championship

The GR86 Championship is a saloon based category racing and has been running for 12 years. Toyota Gazoo Racing New Zealand run the series and also exclusively prepare all the cars at their Hampton Downs facility. For the 2024-2025 season, the series updated from the TR86 to the GR86 with a larger 2.4Litre engine.

• Notable winners : Ryan Yardley back in 2017. Ryan is currently competing in the Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) and won the 2025 Porsche Carrera Cup North America championship.

GT New Zealand

The GT New Zealand Championship is a saloon based category racing and has been running since 2022-23. There are two classes of car competing  simultaneously during a race weekend – Open Class and GT4 Class.

The GT4 Class includes well know internal brands like BMW, Aston Martin, AMG Mercedes, Porshe and Mclaren and are typically closer to factory standard road cars.  The Open class features higher-spec cars such as AMG Mercedes GT2, Lamborghini Super Trofeo and Porshe 911 GT3 Cup.

New Zealand Porsche

The NZ Porsche Race Championship is a series dedicated to Porsche cars. There are 8 classes within the competition to cater to different drivers and budgets and include Boxters and Caymans as well. There are two racing formats- Sprint Racing (10 laps or 20mins) and Endurance Racing (30mins)

New Zealand Endurance

The New Zealand Endurance Championship features both a 1 Hour and a 3 Hour endurance (max 500Km) races. The 3 Hour race comprises of both Elite and Amateur drives with set min/max allowable driver times. It comprises of a North Island (May-Jun) and South Island (Sep-Oct) endurance championships with consistent rules. Drivers can carry over their top two results from their island round towards the national championship campaign.

TA2 New Zealand

TA2 is a V8 muscle car racing series with common chassis and standardised components to create a level playing field for all drivers. To add some dimension to the cars, there are the options of 3 bodies styles – Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro or Dodge Challenger. The series began in 2023 but only achieved full Motorsport New Zealand Championship status for the 2025-26 season with 20 drivers in that season.

New Zealand Super Truck

The series has roots dating back to 1989 and was set by local truck enthusiast seeing the popularity of tractor truck racing in Europe and across the ditch in Australia. The New Zealand Truck Association (TRANZ) initially set out the rules for the series.

There are three racing classes to cater to different ages of car competing in the competition. Some drivers chose to race in both the South Island and National Formula Ford Series.

NZ Sports Car

The NZ Sport Car Race Series has three classes – Two Litre Class and Open Class with Historic Class (car over 25 years old) being cross entered in either the Two Litre or Open Class as appropriate. The two classes have their individual championships and race simultaneously on the track.

Formula Racing New Zealand launched in 2025 and is endorsed by Kiwi motorsport legends like Scott Dixon, Shane van Gisbergen, Brendon Hartley, and Kenny Smith, who lend their names to the series trophies. It has both upcoming and seasoned drivers competing in an open wheel category racing along side the NZ Sport Car series.

Toyota 86 Trophy Series

The Toyota 86 Trophy Series supports the older TR86 model and is seen as a stepping stone to the GR86 national championship. The races are held during New Zealand Autum/Winter. The series started in 2025 and with similar machinery, it offers neck and neck racing.

Open Saloon Car Association (OSCA)

The OSCA series has drivers competing in four different classes GT1 to GT4 which allows for a range of modifications but using the original specification engines built by a vehicle manufacturer . The series has V8 muscle cars along with European and Japanese modified cars.

GTRNZ

The GTRNZ series has drivers competing in four different classes GT1 to GT4 based on the lap speed segment they fall into. To be considered within a class, the cars should be no faster than the times shown below. If a driver’s lap time is faster that their class then penalties are imposed which could range from back of the grid starting position, deduction of points, exclusion from qualifying.

Pre 65

This is a historic motorsport racing series that only has saloon cars manufactured prior to 31 Dec 1965. Drivers are required to retain the original engine components but modify other areas of the cars to suit track racing. It is common to see cars such as Ford Falcons, Ford Mustangs in this series. There are five classes in this series from A to E depending on engine capacity.

Super Mini Challenge

This is a racing series dedicated to Mini Cars. There are four classes of cars based on the year/model of the iconic Mini.  Class 1: Mini Seven; Class 2: Mini Miglia NZ, Class 3: Super Class, Class 4: Open Class.

Sport Saloons Cup

The Sports Saloons Cup (aka SS Cup) offer a low entry to saloon car racing. There are three classes of cars from A (fastest) to C (slowest) based on minimum lap times (concept similar to the GTRNZ series). There are four races in each round and to make it interesting race 2 and 4 has reverse grid handicap start. Drivers are also allowed to pick one Joker Round – during that round the driver receives double points. Successful drivers that improve their lap times from Class A usually move on to OSCA series, which also takes place in the South Island.

Mazda Racing

The Mazda racing series is a series dedicated to the RX7 and RX8, which are powered by the Wankel Rotary Engines. Both RX7 and RX8 compete in the same class however, there is a separate Historic Class for Series 1 RX7 cars.

NZV8 Utes

This racing series was born out of the popularity of the Ute racing in Australia. It originally featured some of the retired Ford Falcon XRS from the Australia series that were brought over during a motorsport  event at Manfield back in 2005. The racing series today features Holden and Ford V8 Utes. In addition to standard races for each round, one round has a dedicated 1 Hour Endurance race only that put both driver and machine to the test.

NZ Six

The NZ Six Racing series is considered as the starting point for drivers looking for a low cost of saloon racing in New Zealand. There are two classes Cup Class and the Trophy Class in this series. There is a separate series held in the North and the South Island
